Zest Japanese Restaurant Vancouver $30 Fish Head Review
Zest Japanese Restaurant
At first, I thought Zest Japanese was some type of brand new modern establishment that just won so many crazy awards, known as one of the best sushi in Vancouver. Well, no! They’ve been opened now since 2005!
We came here on a spontaneous date night, not realizing it was so far out of downtown at all. The atmosphere was lively, all tables were full even at 8 pm. It is situated in a small mall with free parking in front. The hostess quickly sat us down in a booth, however, I don’t like the seating too much. Not a huge fan of being so closed together with others where you can hear their conversations and within an arms reach pick their food if you wanted to…lol!
Our server was amazingly friendly, she gave great recommendations, noting that we should order most items from the feature menu… as it is seasonal. Their regular menu (although popular too) doesn’t change, so it will always be there for the next visit.
A refreshingly different high-quality Japanese restaurant, you can tell the sushi is done with extreme care… and freshness is a huge part of the reason why their restaurant is so popular.
We ordered quite a bit of food: the agedashi tofu – wasn’t a huge fan of the taste. It is a bit too messy to eat, as the cauliflower texture turned out softer than regular tofu. The tempura was really good and not at all overly oily. The soup was PERFECT, really like how there was smoked uni and ikura in there.
Speaking of UNI, you gotta do uni shooters! I know, not everyone is a fan but god… uni is just amazing!
PS: cute sushi plating makes me weak. I love them, here’s my fave one! It’s a must-have in your kitchen! Also ordered the negitoro roll made with bluefin tuna, this is one of my fave rolls. We regrettably didn’t have any sashimi, which I shall order next time.
Also x2 I always appreciate fresh wasabi, here’s my go-to brand!
The highlight of my meal was the fish head. Can you keep a secret? This is NOT on the menu! And they only have 2-3 available every day. Must get it!!!!!!! I fucking can devour fish heads like no tomorrow. Totally worth the $30, and the best thing I had in the whole night.Totally the size of my head too, lol.
Do make a reso as they are very busy. They didn’t win the best sushi restaurant from 2008-2014 for no reason. They are the first Japanese restaurant in Vancouver to implement a refined wine and sake program with a focus on diversification. Which finely, lead them to win the gold for 2017 wine program excellence award at Vancouver International Wine Festival.
